Microsoft will be launching version R2 of Windows CE 6.0 on November 15 in conjunction with the Embedded Technology 2007 show in Tokyo, Japan. Developers worldwide are invited to participate virtually. Register at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/embedded/CE6R2launch/default.mspx for the launch event scheduled for November 15th at 9 AM Pacific Time.

R2 includes several exciting new operating system technologies including support for thin client (RDP 6.0), more VOIP support (video telephony, 3-way audio) and full WSDAPI support for the devices profile for Web Services.

R2 will also provide updates to existing technologies including the latest versions of Windows Media Player OCX, Browser updates and a pluggable font engine framework.

Developers who have purchased Platform Builder CE 6.0 will be able to download the R2 components from Microsoft. Download info will be available on launch date.

There are several more exciting R2 announcements in the Board Support Package (BSP) arena as well. Microsoft plans to ship a production-ready BSP for the STMicroelectronics MB442 Development Platform featuring the high-definition STi7109 System-on-Chip. STMicroelectronic, the number one supplier of semiconductors for set-top box applications is targeting the STi7109 at low-cost set-top box devices. Previously, the only operating system support for the MB442 development platform was Linux and STMicroelectronic’s proprietary operating system called OS21.
