Windows CE Embedded is currently available in two versions: the full-featured Windows CE 5.0/6.0 and Windows CE Embedded Core, a subset for entry-level devices that don’t need the full functionality of version 5.0/6.

Windows CE Embedded 5.0 and 6.0

Windows CE Embedded 5.0 and 6.0 are a great choice for a wide range of small-footprint devices, including:

  • PDAs
  • Smartphones
  • Internet and media appliances
  • Windows-based terminals
  • Basic set-top boxes
  • Retail POS devices*

*While Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS) is usually the best choice for POS devices, Windows CE Embedded may be a more appropriate choice for very small-footprint, mobile POS devices, such as mobile POS terminals, RFID scanners, or portable kiosks.

Based on extensive feedback from device makers, versions 5.0 and 6.0 include features to make the development process more productive, enable further device innovation, provide advanced multimedia and gaming capabilities, and enhance reliability and security.

Windows CE Embedded Core

Windows CE Embedded Core offers the lowest price point of any Windows Embedded operating system, making it ideal for cost-constrained devices that do not require full feature functionality. If your device does not need advanced user-oriented features such as browser, e-mail, messenger, or streaming media capabilities, the Core license may be all you need.

The Core version uses the same platform and application development tools as the full version of Windows CE Embedded, supports all the same CPUs, and provides 90 percent of the functionality of the full version—at a lower price.
