Windows® XP Embedded Target Designer for Windows XP Embedded
Target Designer includes the complete Windows XP Embedded OS, plus a set of platform development tools that enable you to create custom Windows XP Embedded images based on the specific requirements of your hardware and software. In addition to giving you the ability to select only those Windows XP Professional features that your device needs, Target Designer also includes features that enable you to create specialized embedded devices, such as diskless and headless systems.

To achieve a highly granular level of customization, Microsoft has divided Windows XP Embedded into components consisting of clearly defined units of functionality. A component may represent a simple feature, such as Notepad.exe, or a larger and more complex feature, such as Internet Explorer. Windows XP Embedded includes over 10,000 such components. Each component includes data that allows you to mix and match it with other components in order to build a customized operating system runtime image that meets the specific requirements of your embedded device.


Platform Builder for Windows® Embedded CE for Windows CE
Platform Builder is the ideal platform development tool for designing, building, testing, and debugging a Windows CE operating system image. An integrated development environment (IDE) that includes the complete Windows CE OS, it is designed specifically for building customized embedded platforms for small-footprint devices based on Windows CE.

Rapid development features available in Platform Builder include a new platform wizard and 12 preconfigured platforms, plus an emulator that enables you to develop and test platforms and applications on a development workstation, without having to invest in additional hardware. This comprehensive toolset also includes kernel and application debuggers, a device driver test kit, and automated dependency checking to ensure that the operating system image you build includes all features required to support your platform.

Note that, to build applications that run on Windows CE devices, you will also need Microsoft Embedded Visual Studio, a powerful tool that brings a new level of productivity to Windows CE development without compromising flexibility, performance, or control. This tool is separate from Platform Builder and must be purchased from Microsoft rather than BSQUARE.
